Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. has announced a milestone achievement on 28th Oct 2024, securing Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Supplemental Type Certification (STC) to install SpaceX’s Starlink hi-speed satellite internet on its award-winning G650 and G650ER business jets. With this approval, Gulfstream becomes the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) authorized to install Starlink, transforming connectivity options for G650 and G650ER owners.
An STC, or Supplemental Type Certificate, is an FAA-issued approval that allows an OEM or third party to make modifications to an aircraft after its original certification. This process ensures that any new equipment meets strict safety and performance standards. In the case of Gulfstream’s new Starlink STC, this certification permits the installation of high-speed satellite internet directly through Gulfstream’s facilities, bringing in-house convenience to G650/650ER customers.
According to Derek Zimmerman, President of Gulfstream Customer Support, “Starlink is an offering that we know is important to operators. Our team has invested extensive time and resources preparing for this certification, and we are well-positioned across our service network to provide a seamless installation. Having the capability to install this connectivity upgrade at our own facilities, in the hands of our trusted team of experts, is part of our ongoing commitment to our customers.”
Starlink: Hi-Speed Internet in the Sky
Starlink’s high-speed in-flight connectivity offers a transformative experience for business travelers and passengers, with download speeds ranging from 40 to 220 Mbps and latency as low as 99 milliseconds. These speeds enable seamless video calls, data transfers, and access to cloud services, supporting real-time business productivity and entertainment needs during flights.
The Starlink system includes an electronically steered antenna mounted on top of the fuselage, designed to work optimally with Gulfstream’s high-performance aircraft. The antenna is lightweight, around 48 pounds, and sits at just under 3 inches tall at its sides, making it an efficient addition with minimal impact on the aircraft’s aerodynamics. For $150,000, customers receive the full hardware suite: antenna, power supply unit, two wireless access points, and wiring harness. Service plans range from $2,000 monthly for 20GB to $10,000 for unlimited access, providing flexibility based on travel and data needs.
Expanding Starlink Availability Across the Gulfstream Fleet
Gulfstream commints to broadening access to this connectivity upgrade, actively working toward securing similar STCs for additional models, including the G800, G700, G600, G500, G400, and even legacy aircraft like the GIV, GV, and their derivatives. With Starlink’s global, low-earth-orbit satellite network, Gulfstream customers will enjoy worldwide high-speed internet coverage on some of the industry’s most capable business jets.
A Legacy of Innovation
Gulfstream’s investment in Starlink is a testament to the company’s dedication to pioneering in-flight connectivity. Since launching the first purpose-built business jet in 1958, Gulfstream has consistently pushed boundaries, delivering aircraft that blend performance with advanced technological capabilities. With over 3,000 aircraft in service worldwide, Gulfstream remains at the forefront of business aviation, dedicated to innovation, reliability, and customer support.
Stay tuned as Gulfstream extends Starlink across its fleet, setting new standards for connectivity and further enhancing the in-flight experience for its customers.
